Revamping the boxes in my network

In the last few years I have collected a varied lot of computers (boxes) which are all doing their things. Recently I have upgraded some of these boxes to newer operating systems because of circumstances. However, at the moment I’m not very happy with the setup of some of these boxes. the main problem is that there are different operating systems running on each box. Network compatibility is greatly enhanced when you are using the same operating system on all the boxes. This way all applications run on every box without having to worry about differences between versions for each platform.

I want to upgrade all my boxes to the same platform eventually, which I reckon will be Windows 8. In the meantime I will have to upgrade all my computers to Windows 7. A problem with this is that at the moment I have too much data to shuffle around on the boxes to be able to do this concurrently. I have considered buying some space by buying a very big NAS, but it’s not a very practical thing to do because finances are low and its temporary anyways.

I hope this doesn’t go bang on me when I try to swap all the files back and forth. But I’ll probably try some distributed approach involving multiple computers to store the files I need to save.
