Why Saxion is not a place for learning

I’ve had it. Saxion Enschede is just the worst place to study. It’s a baaaaaaad school. (and this is mainly a rant. I need to blow some steam)

I might not be the best example of an ideal student, but this school doesn’t make things much better for me.

– It’s library is overcrowded, and very noisy. There’s even a facebook page about Saxion students fleeing the Saxion library to go study at the University of Twente (UT) library, where you can actually find proper accommodation and a good atmosphere for studying. Also, although there are rooms for studying in private, these are very ill ventilated, making them very uncomfortable and hard places to concentrate properly. They don’t have noise blocking doors either. They just don’t compare with similar spaces in the UT library. to make things worse, they can only be used for two hours at a time. I think that the fact that it is necessary to limit the availability of such resourses to students is a real shame and should be an indicator to the library directors and perhaps the board that some things need to change in the library.

– Many (not all) students at Saxion are slouches. They will not go the extra mile to get a great result. Often they also transfer from MBO schools (vocational tertiary education) which offer good work ethic, but many of these students lack the intellect to get up to speed quickly, and will try to just wing it, instead of trying to understand the subject matter thoroughly. Really annoying when things get a bit more complicated. To make matters worse, the majority could use an ettiquette course before enrolling. Their attitudes towards fellow students are outright appalling. This also partially explains the noise, many students treat the library as if it is a social venue, not a place to study.

– There are no proper places to work on assignments in groups, and project groups are often expected to find their own project space. There’s no help from Saxion finding proper space, nor is any space allocated in sufficient amounts to properly carry out projects. Often these ‘spaces’ consist of tables in large open spaces making it very hard to concentrate or get any meaningful work done while working there, because there’s a lot of noise of people from neighboring project groups talking about project matters.

– Teachers don’t know their stuff very well, and are often not entirely up to date on the state of the art of the subject matter they’re supposed to teach in their courses. I’ve often asked questions that remained unanswered, or were brushed away with shallow answers that didn’t go into the subject matter very much, if at all. (Or you get the answer, go to university, this is out of scope for HBO education)

The same pretty much goes for the Deveter location. (I can’t really comment on the library at the Deventer location, I haven’t used/visited it)

Saxion. FIX THIS!!!!
