Europe is failing. The Greek credit crisis and the current refugee problem underline that the European project is stalling to the point where it is at risk of failing altogether. I think that the solution is the finalisation of the project. In this post I will explain why I think this is the case and how I plan to explain my solution. One of the major problems is that all member states currently retain their individual sovereignty. In effect the European Union is not a Union at all, it is a confederacy. This is a major flaw. (as previously outlined) Instead of muddling about, we should create a new European nation state. We need this because we can’t go back to being just a trade union. Greece has shown that the Euro has made this an impossibility for poorer nations in the EU, and I have no doubt in my mind a secession of the UK will prove that this is equally true for the ‘wealthy’ EU nations. It’s just as impossible to go on as we’re doing now, as, besides being woefully impractical, it will lead to a loss of power on the world stage.
I’m going to write a series in which I would like to document a new model for a European State. The series will be marked with the ‘New Europe’ tag. I plan to discus every chapter in an individual post.
