According to an article published by the Wall Street Journal today, Apple is working on methods to detecting mental illness manifesting itself iPhone users. To me this represents a no go zone for phones. The data will probably be used for a lot more than just telling you, the user of the phone that you’re not well.

Why VR headsets will remain a niche for a while
Lately I’ve been looking for VR headsets. It turns out that a headset which is capable of showing an image without suffering from seeing artifacts needs a resolution of around 6000 by 6000 pixels per eye. Current PC hardware is not yet at the level which can drive such displays.
I guess I’ll be postponing my search for a couple of years, but I might pick up a headset with a couple of imaging problems for the time being.
Which idiot decided to add netplan.io to the ubuntu 18.04LTS release before it was mature?
Today I tried to install KVM on the server I have running at a datacentre somwhere in France. No biggie you’d think, except that in ubuntu 18.04LTS, netplan.io is the default network configuration management tool. It plainly sucks to the point where I’m getting angry at my computer because of it. So here’s a litte rant for the people over at Canonical regarding their decision to include netplan at this stage of development
Intel’s new lineup of CPUs extremely disappointing
Lately, CPU’s made by intel have been ever more disappointing. Intel has focussed on power rather than performance since it’s broadwell architecture. As a performance user, this means that I have to make some decisions I don’t like. The question boils down to the question: “Do I pick processing power over features, or do I need the features instead?”
Intel’s latests lineup, Skylake, is even more of a disappointment than Haswell-E was. The top base clock frequency has actually gone down and performance per clock isn’t terribly impressive if I look at the reviews.
The same is true for many core CPU’s as well. The TDP is king. IF you want a CPU with more cores, you automatically have to accept a lower max CPU base frequency. There really isn’t a need for this. We had CPU’s with higher TDPs in the past, so there’s no limit for current gen CPU’s if TDP is the problem.
Please Intel, make us something nice and speedy again! (preferably something with a 4.5+GHz base frequency and 6 or 8 cores with ECC support and an unlocked multiplier)
Coming up with new identity protection schemes for the network age
If you didn’t know it already, the internet age has a major achilles heel. It is called identity theft. ID theft boils down to someone taking your credentials, and using them for whatever pleases them, which usually means they abuse it for criminal affairs. Many companies and governments deal with ID theft as if it is the fault of the client, not theirs. This is weird because ID theft is usually carried out without the knowledge or consent of the owner of that ID. Continue reading
Need a new phone, but software choices are lacking
My phone is slowly breaking down, so I need a new one. However, looking at the possible choices, I can’t find a model that comes with an operating system that is open for custom development and free of privacy invading bells and whistles. This is a problem. Continue reading
EU leaders postpone new privacy directive under false pretense.
Today I learned that the EU is postponing the introduction of new privacy regulations that would make our on-line lives a bit less hostile than is currently the case. They claim to need more time, but yesterday a letter from a group of lobbyist organizations was made public that puts pressure on the European leaders to lessen regulatory pressure on companies operating in the EU. To me, the timing of the delay is therefore suspicious. Continue reading
My new phone (if it becomes a reality)
Cannonical is developing a new phone with some impressive hardware at its core. It’s called the edge and, provided I can ditch the announced Android part altogether, it will run on open source software without the meddling of Google or any other big name in phone software! Whoohoo! Continue reading
Time to choose what OS you want on your phone.
Currently you’re stuck with what a manufacturer provides for you, but it doesn’t have to be this way, not should it!
Most phones sold today are smartphones. These phones are nothing more than computers that have been designed to be able to make calls. They operate just like
PC’s with voice communication software, nothing more. Just like with PC’s, you should be able to install the OS of your choosing without having to go through the hassle of having to ‘jailbreak’ or ‘root’ your phone.
Quite annoying, really.
I hope Google dies in an epic quest just after it defeats Apple.
I have problems with the state of tech these days. 99% of tech companies are evil. Google and Apple stand out though. Continue reading
